In October 2o1o, we all headed down to Cumberland, Maryland to go on a train ride. Matthew, who loves trains, of course LOVED IT! We also went to some caves and the Smithsonian, so we also got to ride the Metro.

Cape San Blas

So, about a year ago, my two sisters; Angie and Tracy; my niece; Ava; my nephew; Matthew; and I drove 20 hours, along with two huskies and a toy fox terrier, to a little beach on the panhandle of Florida called Cape San Blas. It was a crazy drive, all crammed into Angie's 4Runner, "Maggie the Ferocious Beast". As you can see by the pictures, it was well worth it!

I'm sorry I didn't post this sooner, I've been dead tired every time we get back to the condo. Well, on Friday, we started out our day with a trip to the Iao Valley. It was beautiful, the valley was coated in forest, with a stream running through. The famous Iao Needle was awesome, it looked like something that would be on the island in King Kong. Haha. We went off the trail on one of the dirt paths with a sign beside it saying, "Trail off-limits, travel at your own risk." It sounded kinda like a threat or something. Haha. The path was cool, we went right beside the stream, and had to go through the forest, which looked like billions of tentacles waiting to suck you in. After we left the valley, we headed to Big Beach in Makena. It was the most beautiful beach I've ever seen. The sand was perfectly golden, and the water was a crystal clear turquoise. The water was a little chilly, but not nearly as cold as the snorkeling waters in Molokini, and I got used to the temperature fast. Brett and I went out in the water, which was perfectly clear the whole way out. It was awesome. Angie was being a wimp, scared that the water was too cold, or that the waves would attack her. Haha. I finally convinced her to swim out, because you could see the whole way down to the floor of the ocean. The waves were awesome, because you could see right through them right before they were about to crash. Then I made the stupid mistake of trying to body surf with my sunglasses on, figuring that I could find them in the clear water if they fell off. Well, the water didn't help, I lost my sunglasses. Ugh. We then traversed up the big hill beside the beach, hoping to see some whales. There was an awesome mini lava field in front of the hill, with waves crashing in huge walls against it. I walked down it, climbing over lava rocks, jumping over tide pools. It was awesome down there. The waves crashed right in front if me, making waterfalls across the rocks. There were all these weird creatures attached to the rocks, they looked like something that would jump up and suck your brain out. I called them "Brain-suckers." Haha. After that, we headed to Maluaka Beach, near Makena. It was okay, but there were big rocks in the water. Then we drove through HUGE lava fields, and you could see the source of the lava. For dinner we went to a restaurant in the Maalaea Harbor.

Today went all over the island. First, we were headed to the Iao Valley, but we decided not to go there, because it was covered in clouds. So we headed to the opposite side of Maui, and began driving up Haleakala. We went to the Alii Lavender Gardens, where they grow all kinds of lavender, and tons of other plants. The view from there was amazing, you could see pretty much the whole island west of Haleakala. We then drove even farther up the mountain, toward the Redwood Forest. We were so high, we began driving through the clouds. All the trees have this wierd redish orange fungis stuff on it, which was kinda soft. We got so far on the road, it became a durt road. There were ferral pigs running around, and signs warning you of wild cows. We couldn't go any farther so we turned around with a cliff on one side, and a steep hill on the other. Kudos to Brett! We then went to a small French resturaunt for lunch. Yummy! After that, we started driving in the hills, through the cypress trees, and the smell of eucolyptess trees filled the air. The same strange fungis was on those trees too. We drove over to the north shore, and watch the wind surfers surfing the huge waves. There were tons of surfers. We then drove the whole way back to the condo, and rested for a bit. This afternoon we took a walk on the beach near our condo. The beach was beautiful, and empty. The water was surprisingly warm. We walked about 3.5 miles, and then walked back. Then we had pizza for dinner.

Maui - Day 2

Today was amazing. I woke up at 5:00, and got to watch the sun rise over Haleakala, behind the palm trees. At 7:00 we went down to the Maalaea harbor for the boat that would take us to Molokini. We sailed on the Paragon II and started with whale watching. The whales were awesome, even though there weren't many of them out there. When we finally made it to Molokini, which is a extinct underwater volcanic crater, which is now covered with a coral reef. After we got our snorkeling gear, we climbed down into the water. The water was freezing cold, and I kept forgetting to breathe. Haha. The reef was beautiful, there were colorful fish everywhere, sea urchins, and tons of different corals. We saw an eel, which was really creepy, because it was almost like a snake, and it was wiggling through the coral. We also saw an octopus, which was kinda weird, it moved like a snake/spider and it was strangely fast. Angie was taking pics underwater with her camera, and the photos turned out great. When we got out of the water, we were numb. I literally could not feel my hands, and I kept slipping and falling on the boat. When we got back to the condo, we cleaned up, and headed to Lahaina for a late lunch. We went to Bubba Gump's Shrimp Co. I've never seen so much shrimp in my life. Haha. It was good, and I was stuffed by the time we got done. We then drove up to the Lahainaluna High School, which has a great view of Lahaina, the coast, and Lanai in the distance. On our drive back, we saw about 7 rainbows beside the West Maui Mountains, it was beautiful. We then got back to the condo, and now we are watching American Idol.

Maui - Day 1

Today was interesting... Haha. Last night we stayed at Hyatt Place in Baltimore/Washington. We woke up at 4:00am, after about 2 hours of sleep. We got our stuff together, got changed, and went downstairs for the 5:00 shuttle to BWI. We had to go through security, blablabla, and then at 7:00 we took off. Did I forget to mention this is my first this was my first plane ride? All morning my stomach felt like it was tied in 50,000 different kinds of knots, and I was sooo nervous, but excited at the same time. When we finally took off after the creepy safety video, we were up in the air. Everything looks like little toys from up high, and it looks exactly like MapQuest in "aerial view." I was glued to my window for the first half hour, and then I plugged in my earphones, and started reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, which is really good.:-) After about 2 hours of nothing but an ocean of clouds below, because of the storm system that was moving through the Midwest, we reached the rocky mountains, which looked amazing. I took tons of pics of them, and the desert, which was just completely uninhabited for hundreds of miles. I should soon get the pics posted. We landed in San Fransisco at 9:30 PST, and 12:30 EST, which was a half a hour early. We took off from there at 1:50 PST, and headed across the Pacific Ocean. The ocean looked awesome from the plane, and the clouds looked like they were just floating across the water. We finally landed on Maui at 4:00pm Hawaiian time, which is 10:00pm EST. This was the first time the landing actually hurt my ears. It felt like pins were being shoved inside, and I felt like my ears were gonna blow up. The airport here was a lot different, like something that would be in a 3rd world country, it was very small, with no AC, and it was just a roof with 3 walls, the other being open air. Maui is beautiful, a mini-paradise. The air smells amazing, fresh, and sweet, like 20 times as sweet as honeysuckle in the evening, I love it! Our condo is on the southern side of the island, with a view of Maalaea Harbor, and Haleakala.

Hey!!
Tomorrow morning, at 7:00 am, I will be on an airplane, flying to San Fransisco. We will be in the San Fransisco International Airport for 3 hours, where we'll eat lunch. From there, we will board another plane, which will take us to Maui. I will try to get a blog entry with what we did each day, and maybe throw in a couple pics, and thats only if I'm not completely bushed from the day's activities.

Angie took these pictures, after she got out of the shower on Turkey Day! She went into the shower for 10 minutes, thinking, Ava's in her highchair, and Matthew was watching the TV, what trouble could they get into? Well, when she came out of the bathroom, there was a whole NEW tissue box full of tissues all over the living room, and dining room, and Matthew was throwing them all on Ava, covering her up to her neck in tissues! Angie thought, I'm not even gonna get mad, just clean it up, and finish getting ready to go bowling. Well, when she walked into the kitchen, the door to the refrigerator was hanging open, and there was water, and mushrooms, all over the kitchen floor. Angie just looked at Matthew, and Matthew said,"I wanted a drink, Mamma." Thats what happens when you leave a 3 year old and a 1 year old alone for 10 minutes!

The Sky
By Aaron Kane

You are a painting by a magnificent artist,
with colors blue, and white.
You are like an umbrella,
shielding us from the sun’s harsh light.

You change as much as a beach after a storm!
In the morning, you are full of glorious beauty,
like a fiery rainbow of reds and purples.
You gleam of radiant splendor!

In daylight you change day by day!
Some days, you are like the Caribbean Sea,
blue and swirly white.
Others you are like a crowd of gray snowmen.

Every day you are in a different mood.
When you are sad, you cry teardrops of rain,
when you are mad,
you release the sun’s burning wrath!

The clouds are fluffy pillows of weightless cotton,
floating effortlessly in the sky.
I can lie in the grass for hours,
watching their endless journey.

Though mankind has littered you,
with smoke and simmering ash,
you still keep us safe from the cold and fiery heat!

Nights in Rodanthe

Angie wrote this, and it pretty much sums up our vacation to the Outer Banks this year.

Sorry folks... no Richard Gere or Diane Lane in this version of the story..

We traveled to Hatteras Island, NC for our family vacation this year (19 of us!) and stayed in the seaside village of Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo. Time together as a family is always special.. it's rare to have everyone in the same place at the same time. That is the best part of the story!!

To fill you in on the rest: We had only 2 days of decent weather. We arrived late Saturday. Sunday was gorgeous although a bit breezy.. beach worked out great! Monday, weather began its downward spiral.. wind and rain- each day a little worse than the one before it. Turns out a little storm system they call a Northeaster decided to pay us a visit (reference Diane Lane in 'The Perfect Storm' with George Clooney for this part of the story.... Ok. A little exaggeration.. but that's what it felt like to us!!!). Howling winds and sand that felt like bullets grazing your skin.. rain and storms and tidal flooding.. The roads leading into Hatteras Island were closed down so we couldn't leave if we wanted to.. It was quite depressing.

In the midst of all this - we decide to battle the weather, get out of the house, and take a drive north into Nags Head for dinner (this is before the road closures). We under-estimate the distance.. so it was a 40 min. trip each way for a dinner at Outback (what can I say.. we had a cheese fry craving...). From the beginning it was a disaster.. It was the only time we ate out the entire trip and we were under serviced and over charged and felt like such a waste... Whatever.. chalk it up to an unlucky experience.. we all have those. We go on our (un)merry way.. Just want to get home. Kids are fried.. we are grumpy. So what happens?? We get a $170 speeding ticket on the way home (keep in mind - it is 930pm.. no one on the road.. not a headlight in sight..we are going 69 in a 55.. plus we were traveling over a bridge.. where are they clocking you by radar on a bridge with no shoulder that is 3/4 mile long????). Very depressed at this point...

The next few days are filled with sleeping, tv, playing board games.. I had a blast with this. Brett hates anything but Trivial Pursuit so he read lots of books.. Loser ;) The rest of us 'kids' had fun with monopoly, scrabble, clue, uno, chess, you name it.. Quality time I guess. During the non-rainy times we enjoyed the pool (thank you mom for getting it heated!!!!!) and the hot tub. We cooked a lot, ate a lot, drank a little.. more coffee than alcohol for me though... needed the caffeine to survive the dreariness and keep up with the kids (did I mention there were 4 kids under 3 in this house??! Plus a 5 yr old and twin 9 year olds... crazy insane).

So we managed to hold down the fort during the nasty weather... Thursday rolls around and suddenly the winds calm and the sun peaks out. Never have you seen 19 people gear up and rush down to the sand to take advantage of the change in weather so quickly.. we were running out of time to enjoy what we came here for- the beach!!!! The waters were still extremely rough but you could enjoy the sand and the sound of the roaring surf. We set up our chairs, umbrellas, toys, coolers, and the multitude of gear needed to survive the afternoon with all the kids... We set up far back from the surf break because it was so rough. I am all cozy in my beach chair.. Matthew's playing with his dump truck and shovels, Ava is sitting on a beach blanket eating goldfish crackers, Kevin is surf fishing, everyone else is either soaking up the sun or frolicking in surf.. no one venturing too far due to the rip currents.. OUT OF NOWHERE a rogue wave comes up and attacks us. I SWEAR I am NOT exaggerating this point. We are probably 50 yards back from the edge of the water. Sitting there for 10-15 minutes and not a droplet of water creeping anywhere near us.. and this mini-tsunami decides to take over our camp. I was sitting in a chair , had only enough time to grab Ava- who was sitting in front of me and this wall off water came over us. My head managed to stay above the water but it went over Ava completely and Matthew was tossed about by the wave... thankfully Brett was close enough to grab him. Any standing adults were knocked off their feet and it sucked away all our bags, toys, buckets of fishing gear... We managed to recoup most of our belongings but lost several items in the surf. Four cameras were ruined. Matthew cried over his lost sunglasses that the 'ocean ate'... What a scare!! It seriously could have 'ate' one of the babies.. it was that strong. Scary afternoon...

We decide to try for fresh seafood that evening.. after all - you are on the coast, you should be able to gets shrimp, scallops, fish, and crabs for a seafood night, right? Whatever your little tummy desires.. the ocean's right there in your backyard. Yeah. Ok. Right. No restaurant or seafood market on the island had anything. Notta. Zip. Zero. Not a crab to be picked anywhere. Waters had been too rough all week long for the boats to go out.. No seafood at the beach. Just icing on the cake at this point... A great big thank you to mother nature.

Friday was better.. weather was nice. We got to enjoy the beach before heading home on Saturday.

But, despite the bad restaurant experience, traffic fine, horrible weather, rogue wave, lost/ruined belongings, and lack of seafood... it was our family trip. And now there are memories to savor and stories to be told....

Nature's Melody

Nature's Melody

The sound of the summer breeze,
sweeping through the leaves of the maple trees,
whispering the melody of Nature's sweet song.

The chirp of the crickets as day turns to dusk,
say, "Goodnight," to the sun,
the light dancing above us.

The tune of the mockingbird,
singing "Good morning!" to a new day,
as the first rays of light shine upon the land.

The trickle of a stream,
flowing through a valley,
saying, "Come, drink!" to all life.

The cry of the rain,
showering down on the earth,
with its thirst-quenching tears.

The bang of Thunder,
announcing his strength,
with his fear-inspiring call!

The rush of the waves,
reshaping the shore,
creating a soothing, yet powerful roar!

The melody of Nature,
is mighty and calm,
a simple, yet wondrous song for all!

Where I'm From
Aaron Kane

I am from family get-togethers at my grandparents' farm,
from hay rides, and bingo, and walks throught the jungle of corn stalks.
I am from the 50 million relatives that I don't know,
from walking down that mile-long lane.

I am from Denny and Tina,
from my 7 brothers and sisters.
I am from Ethan, Matthew, Erica, Seairra, and Ava,
from dogs and cats, lizards and turtles, and all the other critters that we had.

I am from driving 800 miles every September in our old Town & Country,
from building sandcastles to boogie boarding with my best friend.
I am from hiking in the green rolling Appalachians,
from walking across the crystal clear mountain water,
wiggling though the evergreens.

I am from all these people, places, and times,
taken for granted until the day Steve died,
from old pictures and memories, frozen in time,
from laughing and crying with the people I love.
I am from moments, both wonderful and terrible,

SPRING GROVE Gladys E. (Forry) Fauth Adams, 81, died peacefully at her home at 4:40 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2008. She was the loving wife of Edwin C. Adams and the late Virgil E. Fauth, who died in 1970. Gladys and Edwin would have been blessed with 36 years of marriage on June 17, 2008. A memorial service for Mrs. Adams will be held in celebration and thanksgiving for her life at 4 p.m. Saturday at the West York Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2601 Bannister St., York, with Elder Troy Ruhlman officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Kingdom Hall. Burial will be private. Gladys was born November 20, 1926 in Hellam Twp., York Co., daughter of the late Paul H. and Anna Mary (Rhodes) Forry. She was the stepdaughter of the late Helen (Grove) Forry. She dedicated her life to homemaking and was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother. Gladys enjoyed carefully tending to her flower beds and creating beautiful and cherished quilts to present to her family and friends. She was a faithful member of the Spring Grove Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. In addition to her husband, Edwin, Gladys will be sadly missed by her five children, Timothy N. Fauth of Spring Grove, Linda E. Ferree of York, Connie E. Carrozza and Tina L. Kane, both of Seven Valleys, and Lori A. McCorkel of Mount Joy, Lancaster Co.; 23 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren, soon to be 30. She is also survived by two halfbrothers, Charles H. Forry of York and Paul H. Forry of East Berlin; and a half-sister, Mary Garman of Manchester. She was preceded in death by a son, Clifford E. Fauth in 2004; a daughter, Joan Nicholas in 1986; and a grandson, Steven Stauffer in 2006. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in memory of Mrs. Adams to the Spring Grove Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1595 Jefferson Rd., Spring Grove, PA 17362. I am from family get-togethers at my grandparents' farm,
from hay rides, and bingo, and walks throught the jungle of corn stalks.
I am from the 50 million relatives that I don't know,
from walking down that mile-long lane.

I am from Denny and Tina,
from my 7 brothers and sisters.
I am from Ethan, Mathew, Erica, Seairra, and Ava,
from dogs and cats, lizards and turtles, and all the other critters that we had.

I am from driving 800 miles every September in our old Town & Country,
from building sandcastles to boogie boarding with my best friend.
I am from hiking in the green rolling Appalachians,
from walking across the crystal clear mountain water,
wiggling though the evergreens.

I am from all these people, places, and times,
taken for granted until the day Steve died,
from old pictures and memories, frozen in time,
from laughing and crying with the people I love.
I am from moments, both wonderful and terrible,
from my family and friends, my favorite people in the world.

Never Got to Say "Goodbye"

She had tears in her eyes,
and to my suprise,
my brother is dead,
thats all she said.

Through all the hugs and tears,
there was enough mourning to last through the years.
We drove to the farm,
lights were flashing with signs of alarm.

It was cold and rainy this October night,
the sky was lit by the faintest of light.
The clouds were crying tears of sorrow,
awaiting the morning, the sunshine tomarrow.

I saw the grieving faces all around me,
they were heartbroken, mournful, and melancholy.
Then there was Ethan playing with his train,
he had no idea of the sorrow, the pain.

She had tears in her eyes,
and to my surprise,
Steve was dead,
that was all she had said.

We were at Ocean Isle,
I was just a child,
I thought my dad had lied,
when he said Tokoda had died.

I remember when we would play,
she ran so fast each day.
We got her when i was four,
I smiled when she came through that door.

She was soon to be put to sleep,
I could only weep.
She was burried in my backyard,
this loss was very hard.

An Ode to Szechwan Chicken

Oh! Shangrila!
What a masterpiece you've made!
The zesty sauce, the creamy chicken!
Oh, how could I live without it?

Alas! I'm trapped like a marooned sailor on a hot, summer day,
when I smell that that taste bud tingling aroma!
My eyes widen, my mouth waters,
when my nose whiffs that familiar odor.

Suddenly, I'm in love, my eyes are watering, I can't blink!
I'm hypnotised, when I see that steam rising from that white, plastic container!
That luscious mix of sweetness, spice, and sour in a sauce, so enchanting!
I try to look away, but my eyes betray me.

I can hear you delightful little bundles of joy speaking to me, saying,
"Aaron eat me, EAT ME!"
My ears perk up when I hear the thrilling sound of the microwave beeping,
the sound that means I'll soon be in paradise!

You flirt with my tongue, as you creep ever closer to my lips!
You taste like a day in the Chinese countryside,
you are a sea of golden brown pleasure!
My mouth is speechless after taking that demanding CHOMP!

You feel like a walk through a field of daisies,
when you touch my lips.
My hands are jittery when the grasp the fork,
knowing that soon I'll be floating in a rainbow of flavour!

Szechwan Chicken, you are my love,
my true beloved companion,
whom I'll share many experiences with,
Szechwan Chicken, I love you!

Which one shall I choose?
Broad and spacious,
or narrow and cramped?
Pleasure and destruction,
or temptations and everlasting life?

I shall choose life,
narrow and cramped,
this road is,
but I will throw my burden on Jehovah,
and he will make my path straight!

I have kept my eyes on the prize,
and I see it there before me!
My love for Him has proved its worth,
time and time again!
My love for God will grow, forever and always!
